Gunshot survivor Cabanas nears comeback
20 January 2012
Salvador Cabanas could return to professional football with boyhood team Club 12 de Octubre, two years after being shot in the head.
Cabanas received the near-fatal injury during an assault in a Mexico City bar on January 25, 2010 while playing for Club America.
The Paraguyan has made a full recover, despite still having the bullet lodged in his brain.
Now 31, he has been given the all-clear by doctors to resume his playing career, and the striker is expected to be unveiled as a 12 de Octubre player in front of the media on Friday.
Cabanas began his career at the Paraguayan Segunda Division club in 1998, moving to Audax Italiano of Chile three years later.
He joined Jaguares de Chiapas in 2003, where 59 goals in 103 league appearances earned him a move to Mexican heavyweights Club America.
Cabanas bagged 66 goals in 115 league games for the Estadio Azteca-outfit, reportedly attracting interest from Europe.
The forward had also made 44 appearances for Paraguay, scoring 10 goals, before the attack.
Cabanas was with the national squad in a non-playing capacity during the 2011 Copa America, but it remains to be seen if he can make what would be a remarkable return to international football.
