Messi speelde inderdaad een fantastische wedstrijd, en hij was de speler die het verschil maakte tegen Colombia.

Ik vond Colombia heel erg zwak spelen, en Davinson Sánchez maakte een zeer zwakke indruk, en hij was ook verantwoordelijk voor de goal van Pratto door hem veel te veel ruimte te geven. Ook telkens als er druk werd gezet stond hij verkeerd gepositioneerd. Ook Eder Balanta speelde ondermaats op de linksback positie ( het is duidelijk dat hij het beste tot zijn recht komt als cv). Jammer dat mede door blessures hij nooit meer zijn niveau heeft gehaald dat hij destijds in het begin bij River Plate liet zien.

Arias ging ook flink in de fout, en had geluk dat Banega de kans niet scoorde.

Pratto maakte deze wedstrijd een goede indruk, maar indien Bauza aan dit systeem wil vasthouden dan kan hij beter kiezen voor Alario in de spits. Alario is jonger, ook balvast en is de hele wedstrijd constant in beweging waardoor hij verdedigers bezig houdt, en Alario heeft bewezen dat hij kan scoren in grote wedstrijden.

Di Maria hoort in deze vorm absoluut niet in de basis, en het wordt tijd dat Cervi of Acuna ( Racing Club) een kans gaan krijgen. Echter Bauza zal wel weer verblind worden door zijn goal en hij lijkt ook een coach die geen grote namen durft te slachtofferen.

Dybala hoort natuurlijk ook in de basis de komende wedstrijd tegen Chili.


Het zegt ook genoeg dat Mercado een upgrade is ten opzichte van Zabaleta tegenwoordig.

Hopelijk gaat Rulli spoedig een kans krijgen in het doel bij Argentinië.

Vidal is geschorst voor de wedstrijd tegen Argentinië.

Heerlijke wedstrijd in de kwartfinale van de Copa Argentina tussen Gimnasia LP - San Lorenzo. Gimnasia LP kwam op een 2-0 voorsprong, en in 10 minuten tijd maakte San Lorenzo 2 goals. Daarna ook 2 goals vanwege buitenspel afgekeurd van San Lorenzo, en Carrera ( Gimnasia LP) heeft een rode kaart gekregen.

Tevez, Pratto & Alario among the Argentine nominees for South American Footballer of the year



Uruguayan newspaper El País has released their nominees for the South American Footballer of the year and there are fifteen Argentines among the extensive list.

The prestigious award dates back to 1971 and has some incredible previous winners from Pele to Diego Maradona but a switch in 1986, when El País took over from Venezuelan newspaper El Mundo, meant winners must be playing their club football in South America.

Last year’s winner was Uruguayan Carlos Sánchez after his vital role in River Plate’s Copa Libertadores win and this year, River are again well represented.

Marcelo Barovero, Gabriel Mercado, Jonathan Maidana, Leonardo Ponzio and Lucas Alario are all credited after another fine year under Marcelo Gallardo but they are far from the only Argentines to feature.

Carlos Tevez won the award three consecutive years between 2003-05 and after finishing runner-up to Sánchez last year is back in the running along with Boca Juniors teammate Ricardo Centurión, who spent the other half of 2016 in Brazil with São Paulo.

Two strikers plying their trades in Brazil make the shortlist with recent Argentina international Lucas Pratto receiving recognition for his form with Atlético Mineiro and Ramón Abila for his achievements with Huracán and Cruzeiro.

Lastly among the Argentines, Benfica’s Franco Cervi is included after his impressive performances with Rosario Central, Argentina and San Lorenzo full back Emmanuel Mas, Lanús’ Román Martínez, Santiago Vergini, Atlético Nacional goalkeeper Franco Armani and Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi for manager of the year.

"Oi murderer, you killed your friends" - Chilean football in shock after horrifying on-field exchange
Esteban Pavez's jibe at Diego Buonanotte has enraged even his teammates given the Argentine's tragic story. Ed Malyon explains...

On-field insults are a part of any sport, and in football - especially on derby day - they may stray close to the line.

But Colo Colo's Esteban Pavez has provoked anger in Chile, even among his teammates, after insults aimed at Universidad Catolica's Diego Buonanotte in Wednesday night's clásico.

The root of the story lies in Argentina in 2009.

Buonanotte was the bright young thing emerging from River Plate's academy, a tiny 5ft 3in playmaker who was tipped to be the country's next great number 10.

Nicknamed el enano (the dwarf), his low centre of gravity allowed him to dribble around Primera División defenders as if they were statues and it appeared only a matter of time before he crossed the Atlantic to star for one of Europe's big clubs.

But then tragedy struck.

In December 2009, Buonanotte was driving three childhood friends through the Buenos Aires suburb of Arribeños in his Peugeot 307. It was raining and late, around 6.45am, as the foursome returned from a night of playing pool.

Surface water on highway 65 caused the young playmaker to lose control of his car and he veered of the road, crashing into a tree at high speed.


Buonanotte, the only one wearing a seatbelt, was the sole survivor.


The player that returned was never quite the same. A career that should have taken him to the highest level ended up as a nomadic plod around the world, taking in Mexico, Italy, Spain, Greece and now Chile, where his tragic past was dredged up in a manner that has shocked and horrified virtually everyone in the shoestring Andean nation.

Buonanotte is still, as you might expect, visibly haunted by that rainy night. You can see it in his sunken eyes.

He would have been within his rights to do so, but in a spate of reports that helps reaffirm the belief in football's on-field decency, Pavez's own teammates have criticised him and apologised for his actions.

It began in the dressing room post-match: "What the f*** did you do? What were you thinking?" was the most printable of Colo Colo sporting director Oscar Meneses' rants at his midfielder.

Colo Colo veteran Gonzalo Fierro then rang Universidad Catolica's captain Cristian Alvarez, "I want to apologise in the name of the club for what Pavez said to Buonanotte... it was wrong and he's very sorry."

As for Buonanotte himself, the wronged party in all of this, he has tried to rise above the filth.

"Yes, he said it," the Argentine admitted. "And several times... But I don't want to make a big deal out of it. It happened."

Little in stature, Buonanotte assumed the role of the bigger man. You can only hope that one day he finds peace.

UMomenteel is de Copa Argentina finale wedstrijd tussen River Plate en Rosario Central bezig. River staat met 1-0 voor door een benutte strafschop van Alario. Nacho Fernandez werd neergehaald in het strafschopgebied. De winnaar van dit duel krijgt een ticket voor de Copa Libertadores.

Edit: Damian Musto scoort de 1-1 nadat Batalla in de fout ging, en 4 minuten later scoort Ruben de 2-1 voor Rosario Central ( assist Teofilo Gutierrez).

En de 2e strafschop van de wedstrijd voor River Plate. Volgens de scheidsrechter werd Alario geraakt, maar het was duidelijk geen strafschop.

Wat een fantastische finale. Ruben scoorde de 2-3 na wederom een blunder van Batalla. Daarna scoorde Alario de 3-3 en bewijst hij wederom dat hij er bijna altijd staat in belangrijke wedstrijden.

Ivan Alonso scoort in de 75e minuut de 4-3 voor River met nog 15 minuten te spelen.

Het is vooral belangrijk dat River Plate nu geplaatst is voor de Copa Libertadores. De laatste weken maakt Batalla een hele zwakke indruk, en het zou slim zijn als er de komende transferperiode een goede keeper wordt gekocht. Batalla was in de jeugd een heel groot talent, maar lijkt tot dusver heel veel moeite te hebben met de druk bij de grote wedstrijden.

Alario wederom zeer goed in een grote wedstrijd, en ik verwacht dat hij in de winter of anders in de zomer een transfer gaat maken na Europa.

Calleri heeft aangegeven dat hij openstaat voor een terugkeer bij Boca. Tot dusver krijgt hij heel weinig kansspel van Bilic bij West Ham.

Verón returns as Estudiantes see off Bahia in the Florida Cup thanks to own-goal howler



Estudiantes’ supporters finally got to see Juan Sebastián Verón back in red and white as El Pincha signed off Florida Cup duty with a 1-0 win against Brazilian club Bahia.

Victory came courtesy of Tinga’s calamitous own goal as the young defender thumped a header into his own net but the main talking point was the 45 minute appearance of president Verón. There is a long way back for the 41-year-old but in the first half the veteran showed off at least part of his range of passing from a deep lying position.

Despite closing their preseason in Florida with a win, Estudiantes will be concerned by Lucas Viatri being forced off with an elbow injury. El Pincha face Boca Juniors next Saturday in Mar del Plata.

Argentine football in line for delayed start at the beginning of March

Argentina’s Primera División should have been getting back underway this weekend but after weeks of back and forth regarding TV money the kick off has been delayed and now it would appear football will resume in March.

The exact details of the government’s deal to end the Fútbol para Todos contract isn’t yet clear nor is the new third-party television contract and the money that clubs will receive but after meetings on Monday some dates have been set.

On February 27th (more likely the 28th because of a holiday) the Argentine Football Association will meet to agree to the termination of Fútbol para Todos, the future deal and the creation of the Superliga.

Provided that runs smoothly, the league season will resume on Friday March 3rd.

On March 16th, the AFA will then hold new elections but given that this is a month earlier than the FIFA normalisation committee had proposed and the number of votes for lower league sides would be reduced, there is still some way before this is guaranteed.

This latest agreement remains fragile and with so many moving parts, there is plenty of room for it to collapse but for now pencil in the first weekend of March for Argentine football’s return.

Argentine football postponed after players’ union strike



If you were tuning in this weekend hoping to see the resumption of the Argentine football season and have missed the news over the past few days, a strike organised by the professional football players’ union has meant the further postponement of matches.

Despite the league season already being delayed a month due to the government’s cancellation of the Fútbol Para Todos deal and the AFA’s inability to sign a new television contract, there is still no clear end in sight.

The players’ union had warned the AFA that unless outstanding salaries were paid then a strike would call a halt on the proposed restart on Friday evening but after being largely ignored until the last minute, no agreement was reached and in a show of solidarity the players went ahead with the strike.

The goverment confirmed that the 350 million pesos owed had been paid to the AFA but San Lorenzo president Matías Lammens said on Argentine radio on Saturday that this still hasn’t been transferred to the clubs.

Even if it had been, union general secretary Sergio Marchi had said that it would have been too late and not enough to cover the months of debt that certain clubs owe to the players.

San Lorenzo, like most of the big Primera clubs, are up to date with their payments but it is further down the Argentine footballing ladder that is most severely effected. Players in the lower leagues, who already do not earn huge wages, have not been paid and so it is with full justification that the union has taken action.

Friday’s Primera matches were the first casualties and the AFA eventually postponed the clashes between Rosario Central and Godoy Cruz and San Lorenzo against Belgrano.

However, initially Armando Pérez stated that this wouldn’t extend to the rest of the round of fixtures and clubs would be obliged to field sides or risk punishment.

This led to clubs stating that they would field youth sides and after a back and forth, this weekend’s Primera action and eventually Nacional B, Primera B and Primera C, were called off.

The AFA must now find an agreement with the players’ union as soon as possible to get salaries paid and Argentine football back up and running.

Lafaard Bauza heeft iedereen geflasht. Ik weet nog dat hij bij z'n presentatie riep dat er een hoop zou veranderen, maar die klootzak wil helemaal niks veranderen. Het enige wat veranderd is is het voetbal dat nog slechter is dan onder Tata.

Ondanks dat hun WK-ticket in dat geval serieus in gevaar komt, hoop ik dat Chili ze flink afstraft, want Bauza verdient niet beter. Aguero gaat op 10 spelen.. Aguero op fucking 10. Ik hou van Messi. Echt. Maar dit ga ik mezelf niet aandoen.

De vermoedelijke opstelling van Argentinie tegen Chili.

Het wordt met deze opstelling een hele klus om Chili te verslaan. De achterhoede is ontzettend zwak, en ik begrijp nog steeds niet waarom Gomez op de rechtsback geen kans krijgt van Bauza.

Otamendi speelt al geruime tijd dramatisch bij Manchester City, maar Bauza blijft vasthouden aan hem.

Higuain zal zeer waarschijnlijk weer falen. Sinds 2012 scoort hij in de Champions League gemiddeld 0,09 doelpunt per wedstrijd, en ook in de Argentijnse ploeg faalt hij altijd op de belangrijke momenten.

Ascacibar zou ik als defensieve middenvelder opgesteld hebben tegen Chili. Hij bewijst wekelijks zijn waarde bij Estudiantes, en zou wat mij betreft het defensieve blok met Mascherano of Kranevitter moeten vormen.

Gino Peruzzi is ook wekelijks de uitblinker bij Boca, maar Bauza blijft vasthouden aan Mercado die defensief zwak is, en ook Mas zie ik morgen overlopen worden op de flanken.

Di Maria blijft een groot raadsel, maar over het algemeen speelt hij meer zwakke wedstrijden dan goede voor de nationale ploeg.

Het zal morgen wederom aankomen op Messi, en ik hoop dat hij een klein stukje revanche voor de Copa America kan nemen door van Chili te winnen.

Onbegrijpelijk deze uitspraken van Bauza. De tweede helft was dramatisch, en objectief gezien had Chili minimaal een punt verdiend. Het wordt tijd dat hij wordt ontslagen, en dat Gallardo die heeft aangegeven dat hij toe is aan een nieuwe uitdaging het gaat overnemen.

De vermoedelijke opstelling tegen Bolivia is simpelweg dramatisch,en het is onbegrijpelijk dat spelers zoals Lavezzi, Pizarro worden opgeroepen en zeer waarschijnlijk in de basis zullen staan tegen Bolivia. Buffarini en Roncaglia komen ook duidelijk tekort voor de nationale ploeg..

River Plate staat met 1-0 voor tegen Belgrano. Doelpunt kwam op naam van Driussi die dit seizoen eindelijk zijn waarde bewijst. Gelukkig heeft Gallardo ook ingezien dat hij in de aanval dient te spelen, en niet zoals in voorgaande seizoenen als verkapte aanvallende flankmiddenvelder. Hopelijk voor River blijft hij na dit seizoen nog minimaal een seizoen bij de club, maar ik verwacht dat er best veel ploegen uit Europa zullen zijn die hem in de zomer willen contracteren.

Messi vier wedstrijden geschorst na beledigen grensrechter
Lionel Messi zal alleen tijdens de laatste WK-kwalificatiewedstrijd van Argentinië nog in actie komen. De Argentijn wordt door de FIFA voor vier duels geschorst na het beledigen van de Braziliaanse grensrechter Dawson Silva in het duel met Chili (2-0) van donderdag.

Argentinië speelt vanavond om 22.00 uur de traditioneel lastige uitwedstrijd bij Bolivia. Daarin zal Messi al niet mee mogen doen. Messi mist daarna ook de duels met Uruguay (uit), Venezuela (thuis) en Peru (thuis). De 29-jarige aanvaller van FC Barcelona mag in de laatste wedstrijd, uit bij Ecuador, wel weer meedoen.

De Braziliaanse scheidsrechter had donderdagavond het verbale wangedrag van Messi tijdens het duel met Chili niet bestraft. Ook werd er na afloop van de wedstrijd niets over gezegd. Op basis van tv-beelden opende de FIFA alsnog een onderzoek. Uitgerekend op de dag van de wedstrijd tegen Bolivia in La Paz deed de tuchtcommissie uitspraak. Messi dient tevens een boete van ruim 9000 euro te betalen. Volgens de FIFA is het vonnis conform de opgelegde straffen in eerdere, soortgelijke tuchtzaken.

Laatste drie keer zonder Messi geen winst
Argentinië heeft de laatste drie interlands zonder Messi niet gewonnen. De ploeg van bondscoach Edgardo Bauza staat in de WK-kwalificatiegroep van Conmebol momenteel op de derde plaats. De eerste vier in de eindstand van de poule met tien teams verdienen een WK-ticket. Nummer vijf moet play-offs spelen.
