    Standaard Copa Libertadores

    Copa Libertadores

    Officiële naam: Copa Toyota Libertadores
    Sport: Voetbal
    Kampioenschap: Zuid-Amerikaans kampioenschap
    Bond/organisator: CONMEBOL
Eerste keer: in 1960 in Zuid-Amerika
    Regerend kampioen: LDU Quito

    2009 Copa Libertadores, Group Stage
    [IMG][/IMG]

Argentina. Boca Juniors. Founded 1905. The second most successful side domestically in Argentina, and the most popularly supported. They’re also the most successful side in this year’s Copa, a win will draw them level (on seven titles) with their fellow Argentines Independiente.

Estudiantes. From La Plata, the capital city of Buenos Aires Province (metro pop.: 833,000). Glory days were four decades ago, when the club won 3 straight Copa Libertadores Titles (1968-’70). Won their 4th Argentine Professional Title in 2006 (and their first in 23 years) under then-manager Diego Simeone, who built that team around Juan Sebastián Verón (who had returned after 11 years in Europe). Verón is still on the squad, which finished in 7th in the 2008 Apertura. [Note: qualification in Argentina for some of the spots in the Copa Libertadores is based on league form over one and a half seasons.] Kit: red/ white vertical stripes on jersey; black pants. Nickname: los Pincharratas (the Rat Stickers), for the plethora of rodents in their old ground.

Lanus. Founded 1915. [Lanus is a southern suburb of Buenos Aires.] One of the revelations of recent years in Argentina, winning their first title in the 2007 Apertura to qualify for this year’s Copa, they play some of the most attractive football in the country. They won the 1996 CONMEBOL (a forerunner of the Copa Sudamericana).

River Plate. Founded 1901. Top of CONMEBOL’s recently revised all-time Copa Libertadores standings (which award points-per-game won), largely thanks to have participated in the Copa more times than any other Argentine side. They’ve also won more domestic titles than any one else, but have only won the Copa twice, and finished bottom of the 2008 Apertura.

San Lorenzo de Almagro. Founded 1908. The only one of Argentina’s ‘Big Five’ never to have won the Copa, San Lorenzo’s most recent domestic title came in the 2007 Clausura, but they went to a three-way playoff with Boca and minnows Tigre to decide last year’s Apertura. Have 10 professional titles in Argentina, and will be desperate to break their Copa duck.

Bolivia. Club Aurora. Founded 1935. The current champions of Bolivia after claiming their first professional title with last year’s Clausura, but also won a semi-pro title in 1963. Their one previous Copa appearance was in 1964, with a first round exit.

Club Universitario. Founded 1962. Last year’s Torneo Apertura was their first domestic title, after winning promotion to the top flight in 2005. They’re making their Copa Libertadores debut this year, but appeared in the Copa Sudamericana in 2006, with a first round exit.

Brazil. Cruziero. Founded 1921. The club that launched Ronaldo’s career, two-times Copa Libertadores winners [1976 and ‘77] and once Brazillian champions (in 2003), the Belo Horizonte team finished third in last year’s Brasileiro.

Gremio. Founded 1903 [in the southern city of Porto Allegre]. Have won two Copas [1983, 1995] and two national titles, enjoying their most successful era under just-sacked Chelsea manager Luis Felipe Scolari, and have produced players like Ronaldinho and Manchester United’s Anderson through their academy. Lost the 2007 Copa final by a landslide against a Juan Roman Riquelme-inspired Boca Juniors.

Palmeiras. From Brazil’s largest city, Sao Paulo (metro pop.: 18,505,000). A 2004 survey found Palmeiras to be the 4th-most-supported club in the country, with 11.8 million fans {you can see the whole list (plus a zoom map of 2008 Brazil Campeonato Serie A clubs), in this post, from last May: Click here}. Founded in 1914, as Palestra Italia, by members of the city’s Italian community (the club changed their name during WW II). Palmeiras have won 4 Campeonato Serie A Titles (the last in 1994), and 1 Copa Libertadores Title, in 1999. They just missed out on the 2008 Brazillian Title (won by Sao Paulo for the third straight season), and recently had their manager, Vanderlei Luxemburgo, attacked and injured by supporters {see this (from a blog on the FourFourTwo site) }. Kit: all green.

Sao Paulo. Founded 1930. One of Brazil’s giants, their 2008 league win made them the first side to win the Brazilian title three times running. They’ve also won three Copa Libertadores titles and have been crowned world champions [FIFA Club World Cup] thrice.

Sport Recife. Founded 1905. Eleventh in last year’s first division, they qualified for the Copa by virtue of winning the Copa do Brasil, but have made only one previous appearance, in 1988, when they were eliminated in the group stage.

Chile. Colo Colo. Founded 1925. One of eight founder clubs of the Chilean first division in 1933, they’re the only club to have never been relegated, and with 28 titles (including five in the last 6 championships) are the most successful trophy-wise, too. Having won the 1991 Copa Libertadores, they’re also the only Chilean side to have been crowned South American champions.

Everton (de Vina del Mar). Founded 1909 by an Englishman, David Foxley, and named after a rather more famous club in his home country. The second most successful of the clubs outside the Chilean capital Santiago, with four national titles, most recently in June last year when they claimed the Apertura title. Previously knocked out in the first round of the 1977 Copa, their only other appearance.

Universidad de Chile. From the capital, Santiago (metro pop.: 5,637,000). The well-supported club has the second most National Titles, with 12 (last: 2004-Apertura), but 16 less than Chilean giants Colo Colo. Nickname is los Chunchos (the Owls). Kit: all blue.

Columbia. América de Cali. Founded 1918 or 1927, depending who you ask. The joint most successful club (along with Millonarios of Bogotá) in the history of the Columbian league, América have been in financial turmoil for some time and frequently have transfer negotiations affected by their controversial inclusion on the ‘Clinton List’ [see this]. Reached three straight Copa finals in the mid-1980s, and were there again in 1996, but have never managed to get their hands on the trophy.

Boyacá Chicó. Founded 2002 [in the capital, Bogotá, but in 2004, moved to the city of Tunja in the province of Boyacá] . One of several relatively new clubs in Columbia to have enjoyed success early on in their history, after beating the domestic giants of América de Cali in the final of last year’s Torneo Apertura. They went out in the qualifying round of last year’s Copa, so will be hoping to prove they can do the business in this year’s group stage.

Independiente Medellin. Dubbed “El Ponderosa de la Montaña†(the powerful of the mountain). Had a great run in the early part of this decade, with Nationbal Titles in 2002-II and 2004-I, as well as a third-place finish in the 2003 Copa Libertadores. First Copa appearance since ‘05. Medellin is the third largest city in Columbia (metro pop.: 2,994,000). Kit: red jersey, blue pants.

Ecuador. Deportivo Cuenca. Relatively new club, established in 1971. Won their only National Title in 2004. Cuenca is the third largest city in Ecuador (metro pop.: 417,000). Third Copa Libertadores appearance in 5 years. Kit: red, with black.

Deportivo Quito. Founded 1940 as Sociedad Deportiva Argentina, and changed their name to the current Sociedad Deportivo Quito in 1955. Spoiled their cross-city rivals’ post-Copa celebrations somewhat by beating Liga to the Ecuadorian title last year to claim their third national title. This is their sixth Copa, and they’ve only made it beyond he first round once, in 1989, when they reached the second round.

LDU de Quito. Founded 1930. The defending Copa Libertadores champions after shocking all comers on their way to last year’s final before beating fellow first-time-finalists Fluminese of Brazil on penalties to become the first Equadorian side to win the Copa. Have recently changed managers after Edgardo Bauza’s resignation, but whilst few expect lightning to strike twice, they’ll at least want to show last year wasn’t a fluke.

Mexico. CD Guadalajara (â€Chivasâ€). Founded 1906. Mexico’s most widely-supported club, in no small part by virtue of their policy of fielding only Mexican players. They’ve come as close as any to winning the Copa Libertadores, having reached back-to-back semi-finals in 2005 and 2006, but their most notable trophies are their [record] 11 Mexican national titles, most recently the 2006 Apertura. [â€Chivas†(’Goats’) nickname was applied as an insult by a journalist in 1948, picked up by opposing fans, and eventually adopted by the club’s supporters themselves with pride {thanks to Albion Road, here, site for that}.]

San Luis FC. Founded 1957. Avoided relegation by the skins of their teeth at the end of the 2006 Apertura, but are making their Copa debut this term by virtue of an impressive performance in the regular season of last year’s Apertura.

    Paraguay. Guarani.
Founded 1903 [named for the indigenous people of the region, the Guarani; uniforms with black and yellow vertical stripes are in reference to Uruguayan giants Penarol]. Have won nine championships, most recently in 1984, and were runners-up to Libertad last year. Reached the Copa semi-final in in 1966, but haven’t been beyond the first round in two attempts this century.

Libertad. Founded 1905. With 14 titles, they’re the third most decorated club in Paraguayan football, and have nine Copa participations to their name, with semi-final appearances in 1977 and 2006, and a quarter-final in 2007.

Nacional.(Ecuador). The football club of the Equadorian military, they were founded in 1964. Tied with Barcelona Sporting Cub for the most National Titles, 13 (their last in 2006). From the capital, Quito (metro pop.: 2,686,000). Kit: all red, with blue trim.

Peru. Universidad San Martin de Porres. Founded 2004, and have already won two titles- in 2007 and 2008- after beginning life in the second division, by ‘buying’ their first division place from Sport Coopsol, and improving rapidly. The first Peruvian club to be founded as a Joint Stock Company, they beat River Plate of Argentina 2-0 in their first ever Libertadores match last year, but were eliminated at the end of the group stage.

    Univeritario.
Founded 1962 [are the most popular club in Peru]. Have never been relegated from Peru’s top flight, and have won more more Peruvian tiles (24) than any other club, and were the first Peruvian club to reach the final of the Copa, in 1972, but have won no national championships since 2000.

Venezuela. Caracas FC. Founded 1967. Nine national titles make them the most-crowned team in Venezuela, and they became the first Venezuelan side to ever win in Argentina when beating River Plate two years ago. Finished second last season, and have never been beyond the round of sixteen [2nd round], which they reached in 2007.

Táchira. Founded 1974. They’ve won six first division titles, most recently last season, and reached the quarter-finals of the 2004 Copa before losing a match. [From San Cristóbal, Tachira state, in the far west of Venezuela near the Columbian border.]

Boca Juniors among favorites in Copa Libertadores

MONTERREY, Mexico — The group stage of the 2009 Copa Libertadores kicks off this week with Brazilian and Argentine clubs once again the leading title contenders.
Nine matches are played this week in the 32-team competition, with Argentine powerhouse River Plate taking on Nacional of Paraguay in Buenos Aires on Thursday in Group 3 and Bolivia's Aurora playing its first Libertadores match in 45 years against Colombian club Boyaca Chico on Tuesday in Group 7.

Pre-tournament favorite Boca Juniors doesn't enter the competition until next week, when it takes on Deportivo Cuenca in Group 2.

Boca qualified for the Libertadores after beating Tigre in last year's Apertura championship, and is hoping star midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme can help guide a squad full of youthful talent. Veteran goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri also returns to Boca after a spell in Spain with Getafe and striker Martin Palermo is close to first-team action again after a lengthy injury layoff.

Brazilian league champion Sao Paulo also has this week off, before playing Group 4 opponent Independiente Medellin of Colombia on Feb. 18.

In Tuesday's other matches, America de Cali visits Defensor Sporting in the first ever meeting between the clubs and Guarani plays Deportivo Tachira.

Two other Argentine clubs start their campaigns by hosting Mexican teams on Wednesday. CA Lanus will hope to register an early advantage over Chivas of Guadalajara, with both teams favored to advance from in Group 6. Venezuela's Caracas and Chilean club Everton are also in the group, and play each other in Vina del Mar on Feb. 17th.

San Lorenzo, who qualified for the Libertadores by having the most points in the Argentine league during the last 18 months, will face Mexican club San Luis in a clash that should help predict the likely winners of Group 8.

San Luis have lost several of the players who helped the club top the standings of the Mexican Apertura championship last year, but will still be confident of progressing from a group that also features Peru's Universitario and Libertad of Paraguay. Those two teams also play Wednesday in Asuncion.

No Mexican club has won the Copa Libertadores since they were first invited to take part in 1998, and Chivas and San Luis are hoping to go one better than the country's previous best effort when Cruz Azul lost on penalties to Boca in the 2001 final.

On Thursday, Uruguay's Nacional hosts Peru's Universidad San Martin in Montevideo in Group 3, while two Bolivia's Universitario de Sucre hosts Deportivo Quito of Ecuador in Group 5.

The four teams in each group play each other home and away, with the top two advancing to the final 16.

    River finally win

It was only Néstor Gorosito’s second competitive match in charge of River Plate, but their first win of 2009 already seems like it’s been a long time coming, following the disappointments of the Torneo de Verano. On Thursday night, in their first Copa Libertadores group game against Paraguayans Nacional, they were disappointing again, but Diego Buonanotte won it for them with almost the last kick.

River started the stronger of the two sides, with Gustavo Fernández given his debut up fron. The hosts dominated possession in the first half but with each chance that went begging, they lost a little confidence, and gradually Nacional began to come into it, and Juan Ojeda had to make a couple of stops before the break arrived.

In the second half Gorosito made changes designed to help River make the breakthrough that had eluded them in the first. Robert Flores, the young Uruguayan on loan from Villarreal, replaced Matías Abelairas at the break, whilst just before the hour one debutant was withdrawn for another - Fernández jogging to the sidelines to allow Cristian Fabbiani, finally arrived from Newell’s, to take his bow.

After Fabbiani’s introduction River’s defence fell victim to the temptation to simply launch long balls his way, and the home side created very little in the way of chances on goal. With eight minutes to go, Argentine striker Hébert Arriola could have made things really embarrassing for River, but ran out of space after rounding Ojeda. And then at last, the goal arrived for River.

There was plenty wrong with it - Cristian Fabbiani knocked down a high ball from Mauro Rosales using his left arm before turning and shooting - that was saved by Ignacio Don, another Argentine in the Paraguayan goal, but Buonanotte, who’d been offside when Fabbiani’s initial shot was taken, was on hand to stab it over the line. At last, Gorosito has a win. It wasn’t pretty, but the fans will be hoping it’s something to build on.

Boca, Quito to open 2009 Libertadores campaign

MONTERREY, Mexico (AP) -Six-time Copa Libertadores champion Boca Juniors of Argentina open their 2009 campaign this week, looking to justify their position as pre-tournament favorites.

The second week of group matches in South America?s premiere club football competition will also see defending champions Liga de Quito of Ecuador play for the first time, while Sao Paulo, Palmeiras, Cruzeiro and Sport Recife kick off the Brazilian challenge.

Quito face a tough first match at home against Palmeiras in Group 1 on Tuesday. The Brazilians will provide stiff opposition as the Ecuadorians attempt to get off to a good start in the defense of the surprise title won against the odds last year.

Also in Group 1, Chile?s Colo Colo hope to make a positive start against another Brazilian club, Sport Recife, at Santiago on Wednesday.

Boca, led by star midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme, are favorite to wrest the title out of Ecuador and will host preliminary round qualifiers Deportivo Cuenca, another Ecuadorian club, on Tuesday in Group 2.

The Argentine champions, with goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri back in the team after a stint in Spain, also prepare to welcome back powerful striker Martin Palermo, who is close to full fitness after a long injury layoff.

A win over Cuenca would put Boca in a strong position to advance, alongside Venezuelan club Deportivo Tachira who secured a surprise 2-1 away victory over Paraguay?s Guarani in the group?s opening round last week.

Brazil?s strongest hope for a 14th Libertadores crown is likely to focus on 2005 winner Sao Paulo, the current Brazilian champion after clinching an unprecedented third successive title in December.

Sao Paulo begins the quest for the club?s fourth Libertadores title with a home match against qualifiers Independiente Medellin of Colombia in Group 4 on Wednesday.

The Brazilians are strong favorites to qualify from a group that also includes Uruguay?s Defensor Sporting who beat Colombia?s America de Cali 1-0 in the group?s opener last week.

Key figures for the Brazilians include veteran goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, who is also adept at scoring goals from penalties and free kicks.

In front of Ceni, midfield lynchpin Hernanes backs up the predatory strike pairing of Washington and Dagoberto.

Former Lazio, Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron will be hoping to inspire another Argentine contender in the shape of Estudiantes.

The La Plata club squeezed into the group stages with a narrow victory on away goals over Peru?s Sporting Cristal in the preliminary round, but start as favorite to progress from Group 5.

Cruzeiro host Estudiantes at Belo Horizonte on Thursday, with both clubs hoping to take advantage of a 1-1 draw between Bolivia?s Universitario de Sucre and Ecuador?s Deportivo Quito last week to take the group lead.

In Group 3, Paraguay?s Nacional will play its second match at home against Uruguayan namesake Nacional on Wednesday.

The Paraguayans will be looking to bounce back after losing to a stoppage time goal against River Plate in Buenos Aires on Thursday.

The Uruguayans will be aiming to build on a stoppage time winner of their own after snatching three points against Peru?s Universidad San Martin with a 2-1 home win last week.

In Group 8, Argentina's San Lorenzo will play to build on last week's commanding 4-1 home victory over Mexican club San Luis.

The Argentines travel to Lima to face Universitario on Thursday, with the Peruvians already in desperate need of a positive result after a 2-1 away loss to Paraguay?s Libertad.

Venezuelan club Caracas travel to Vina del Mar to face Chile?s Apertura 2008 champions Everton in a Group 6 clash.

Argentine club Lanus snatched an injury-time equalizer against Mexico?s Guadalajara in the group?s first fixture.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oun4RjIC4ys[/ame]

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMjGEpUynj4[/ame]

Boca Without Stars For Tachira Test

Boca Juniors will be without a number of their star players for the Copa Libertadores Group 2 encounter with Deportivo Tachira on Wednesday...

Boca Juniors travelled to Venezuela for their Copa Libertadores clash with Deportivo Tachira without four of their key players.

Carlos Ischia decided to give a rest to Claudio Morel Rodriguez and Hugo Ibarra, while Rodrigo Palacio and Martin Palermo are out injured.

These absences have given Ischia plenty of problems when selecting his team, and he has yet to announce his starting XI for the match.

"Both the Libertadores and the local championship are our priorities, but we want to preserve the players who are injured like Palermo, and that is why we have a complete team to face Tachira," said Ischia.

Without both Palermo and Palacio, Ischia has decided to go for Lucas Viatri and either Ricardo Noir or Luciano Figueroa in his attack.

Boca returned to winning ways on the weekend, with a 3-1 victory over Huracan, and Palermo got on the scoresheet.

Meanwhile, in other team news Facundo Roncaglia will occupy Hugo Ibarra's position in defense, while defensive midfielder Sebastian Battaglia will return to the side after completing a suspension.

This will be Ischia's second Venezuelan expedition with Boca. Last year his team debuted in the Copa Libertadores with a 1-1 draw with Union Maracaibo.

Deportivo Quito 1 - Estudiantes 0 (Copa Libertadores, March 10, 2009) A late strike from Colombian marksman Leider Preciado sealed the match.

Universitario Peru 0 - San Luis 0 (Copa Libertadores, March 10, 2009) The main flashpoint of the match arrived just before the half hour mark, a crude two-footed challenge from Nolberto Solano on Ignacio Torres provoked a melee. The referee astonishingly sent off San Luis defender Alfredo Gonzalez and Universitario midfielder Rodolfo Espinoza, leaving Solano unpunished.

Guadalajara (Chivas) 1 - Caracas 0 (Copa Libertadores, March 11, 2009) Despite going down to 10-men when Oliva collected his second booking before the hour mark, Chivas went on to claim a narrow victory thanks to Galindo’s late header.

Deportivo Tachira 1 - Deportivo Cuenca 0 (Copa Libertadores, March 11, 2009) Tachira played with 10 men from the 39th after defender Julio Cesar Machado was shown a second yellow card. The numbers were levelled up after Cuenca defender Juan Guerron was also shown the red card after 63 minutes. And the decisivise moment arrived 20 minutes from time as Jose Javier Villafraz curled home a lovely free-kick.

Everton 1 - Lanus 1 (Copa Libertadores, March 11, 2009) Lanus took the lead with a goal from Diego Gonzalez in the dying seconds of the first half, but Everton replied with a penalty by Argentine striker Ezequiel Miralles eight minutes after the restart.

Universidad San Martin 2 - Nacional 1 (Copa Libertadores, March 12, 2009) Pedro Garcia scored after Gonzalo Ludena broke from the halfway line in the 52nd minute and headed in from another chance created by Luduena on the hour. Heber Arriola pulled one back for the visitors in the 71st minute.

Deportivo Cuenca 3 - Deportivo Tachira 1 (Copa Libertadores, March 17, 2009) Jose Granda took advantage of slack marking at a quickly taken short corner to rifle a deflected shot for the hosts. Rodrigo Teixeira doubled the lead before the break with Teixeira grabbing his second after the interval when the Tachira keeper made a mess of a long shot from Matamoros. A Javier Villafraz free-kick in the 76th minute was scant consolation for Tachira.

San Lorenzo will have to wait at least another year to break its jinx in the Copa Libertadores after a 2-0 defeat to San Luis of Mexico on Wednesday confirmed the Argentine side's elimination from the tournament and led to Miguel Angel Russo's resignation as coach.

Meanwhile, an away victory for Palmeiras in the all-Brazilian clash with Sport Recife complicated matters even further in Group 1, while Argentina?s Estudiantes and Universidad de Chile also registered important wins.

Experienced coach Russo paid for the loss in Mexico with his job after the Argentine club again fell short in the Copa Libertadores.

"I spoke with (San Lorenzo president Rafael) Savino and told the players. Football is like that, things like this happen. That?s it, I wish San Lorenzo all the best,'' Russo told Fox Sports after the match.

San Luis' slim chance of qualification now rides on beating already-qualified group leader Libertad and hoping San Lorenzo beats Universitario of Peru in the last round of matches. The Mexican club also needs a three-goal swing in goal difference to pip the Peruvians to second place.

Jesus Palacios crowned a tireless performance in the midfield for San Luis with the opening goal from a Noe Maya cross after 43 minutes.

Both clubs knew anything other than a win would mean elimination, but San Luis reacted to the pressure better in the second half. Jose Reyes headed home to give the Mexican club a two-goal cushion after 67 minutes and San Lorenzo then folded weakly.

Russo won the title with Boca Juniors in 2007 but failed to have the same instant impact at San Lorenzo, the only member of the so-called "big five'' Argentine clubs not to have won the Libertadores.

Both clubs were reduced to ten men at the end of the first half when San Lorenzo's Nestor Silvera and San Luis defender Omar Monjaraz were sent off after clashing on the edge of the San Luis box.

In Group 5, Cruzeiro lost its way in more ways than one after the Brazilian's team bus took a wrong turn on the way to the stadium to face Estudiantes, delaying kick off by 30 minutes.

The Cruzeiro players had to take to the field without warming up properly and produced a disjointed performance in a 4-0 loss.

The Brazilian club stays top of Group 5 with 10 points, but Estudiantes is now just one point behind. Deportivo Quito of Ecuador follows with five points, while Universitario of Bolivia eliminated by the Estudiantes win - has one.

Gaston Fernandez took advantage of Cruzeiro?s shoddy attempt at an offside trap after five minutes, pulling the ball back for Juan Sebastian Veron to opened the scoring for Estudiantes.

Fernandez then chipped over Fabio for the second goal after 32 minutes when Marquinhos gave the ball away in defense. Substitute Cristian Sanchez notched a double to bury the Brazilians with goals after 74 and 78 minutes, both strikes set up by Veron.

Keirrison and Diego Souza scored the goals that gave Palmeiras a vital away win in Group 1 over Brazilian compatriots Sport Recife.

At the group's half way stage, Palmeiras moved level on three points with defending champion Liga de Quito, with Sport and Colo Colo of Chile leading the way on six points.

Keirrison finished from close range after 23 minutes following a shot by Mauricio Ramos and Souza left defenders in his wake before finishing over goalkeeper Magrao after 72 minutes.

In the day's final match, Universidad de Chile dismantled Colombia's Boyaca Chico with a 3-0 home win. Goals from Emilio Hernandez after 21 minutes, Juan Manuel Olivera after 47 minutes and Nelson Cuevas in stoppage time sealed the victory.

The three points allowed the Chilean club to leapfrog Chico into second place in Group 7.

Kijk hem geregeld even terug.

Palmeiras 1 - Sport Recife 1 (Copa Libertadores, April 15, 2009) Palmeiras remain in grave danger of exiting the Copa Libertadores in the group stage after failing to beat ten-man Sport Recife. Keirrison continued his fine scoring run with a penalty only for Wilson to equalise just before the break. Seconds later Wilson was sent off for a second booking despite having not taken his shirt off completely during his goal celebration.

Universidad de Chile 0 - Gremio 2 (Copa Libertadores, April 15, 2009) Leo and Maxi Lopez secured an impressive victory for the Brazilians.

Independiente Medellin 2 - Sao Paulo 1 (Copa Libertadores, April 15, 2009) Medellin took the lead through Diego Cabrera in the 15th minute following good work from Restrepo, and a Rafael Castillo shot took a couple of deflections en route to goal to make it 2-nil in the 27th. The Brazilians got one back at six minutes from the break as Andre Lima struck home from outside the box.

Tachira started the second half on the attack, and substitute Del Valle equalised in the 68th minute with a stunning left-footed shot that flew into the top corner from 30-yards. Marlon Fernandez scored the winner six minutes later with a strike that was deflected twice on its way past Guarani goalkeeper.

Boyaca Chico 2 - Aurora 1 (Copa Libertadores, April 16, 2009) Miguel Caneo scored from a penalty to put Chico ahead in the 49th minute. America de Cali 0 - Defensor Sporting 0 (Copa Libertadores, April 16, 2009) Defensor had a man sent off after 79 minutes against the Colombian side, but claimed a point to move within two of Independiente Medellin, with whom they have a qualification showdown in the final round of group matches.

Copa Libertadores 2009: Boca still in, River eliminated

River Plate crashed out of the 2009 Copa Libertadores last night after a 4-2 defeat in Asunción to Nacional de Paraguay, thus allowing Boca Juniors fans to laugh off most of the frustration at seeing their own team’s progress delayed for another match after their own defeat, 1-0 away to Deportivo Cuenca.

Big names already out of Copa Libertadores

The Copa Libertadores is down to its final week of group play, with defending champion Liga de Quito and big names like River Plate and San Lorenzo already eliminated.

Others, including Boca Juniors and Palmeiras, still have work to do to join the 10 teams already qualified for the knockout round.

Gremio, Sao Paulo, Cruzeiro and Sport Recife of Brazil, Defensor Sporting and Nacional of Uruguay, Estudiantes of Argentina, Libertad of Paraguay, Caracas of Venezuela and Universidad San Martin of Peru have already qualified. Boca only needs one point at home against Deportivo Tachira of Venezuela on Thursday to join that list and progress from Group 2.

"It's a very special tournament," Boca playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme said earlier this month. "I'm really looking forward to see if we can get to the final."

Pre-tournament favorite Boca has won the Copa Libertadores four times in the last eight years and is aiming to draw level with Argentine rival Independiente with seven titles overall.

The most intriguing match will be played in Group 1, where defending champion Liga de Quito has already been eliminated. Two former champions will go head-to-head for the last qualifying place.

Palmeiras, champion in 1999, needs to beat 1991 winner Colo Colo in Santiago on Wednesday to progress. Palmeiras striker Keirrison, who shares the competition's scoring lead with six goals, believes his club is ready. Among Latin America's best young stars, he is certain to be watched by high-powered European teams.

Also, Mexican club Chivas of Guadalajara must avoid defeat in a tricky match at Everton of Chile on Wednesday to seal qualification from Group 6 alongside Caracas.

In Group 8, former Newcastle winger Nolberto Solano will lead Universitario of Peru against Argentine club San Lorenzo. The Peruvian team need a point to guarantee progression.

Matches will be played Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, with four each day across six groups. Groups 4 and 5 concluded last week.

A total of 44 clubs began the competition in January, with 12 eliminated in the preliminary round. The remaining 32 clubs were then arranged in eight groups of four, with the top two progressing to the knockout phase, which starts on May 6.

The two-legged Copa Libertadores final is slated for July 1 and 8.
