Lo Celso gaf een elleboog uit frustratie, maar het blijft een ontzettend domme keuze van Coudet om hem niet samen met Cervi te laten starten in deze wedstrijd. Na de viering van het doelpunt van Berrio voor de neus van doelman Sosa sloegen bij Rosario Central alle stoppen door. Coudet heeft simpelweg gewoon gefaald door Gli Romero en Lo Celso. Ook mistte Rosario centraal achterin duidelijk de ervaren Pinola die nog 4 maanden aan de kant staat vanwege een blesurre.

De competitie heeft Rosario Central totaal laten lopen voor deze Copa Libertadores, en dan op deze manier uitgeschakeld worden is ontzettend zuur. Marlos Moreno zou iets voor Palermo zijn. Volgens de geruchten zou hij voor 10 miljoen op te halen zijn. Jullie hebbben dan eindelijk weer een speler die van het kaliber Dybala kan worden. Racing bid farewell to Diego Milito with victory over Temperley


Temperley’s visit to Avellaneda was an end of season dead-rubber but El Cilindro was packed to the rafters with Racing supporters wanting to say goodbye to their iconic number 22, Diego Milito.

El Príncipe’s illustrious 17-year career was coming to an end in the place where it all began and despite never being recognised as one of world football’s best players, there have been few better finishers in the past decade.

Temperley proved to be the most generous of visitors and the two first half penalties they conceded presented Diego Milito with the opportunity to score his 255th career goal. Despite the star of the show missing his second attempt, Oscar Romero was on hand to head in the rebound and so it remained until full-time.

The result didn’t matter, the day was all about honouring a player that has given as much to Racing as any player in the club’s history. La Academia’s two league titles in the past 50 years were made possible in no small part by the talents of Milito. The 2001 Apertura and the 2014 Transición bookended El Príncipe’s wonderful career and so Saturday’s farewell proved to be an emotional day for everyone at the club.

The 22nd-minute tribute saw a giant banner unfurled from the top tier of the Cilindro but it was at full-time when the impact of Milito at the club could be understood. There were tears from the 36-year-old, his teammates and supporters but given this special connection, it’s surely a matter of time before El Príncipe moves into the dugout as Racing coach.

Leest erg makkelijk weg omdat het gevuld is met wat langere intrigerende verhalen over het Argentijnse voetbal die worden afgewisseld met korte anekdotes.
Ook het maatschappelijke aspect wordt erg goed belicht, en er wordt genoeg aandacht besteed aan de geschiedenis van en de toenmalige situatie in Argentinië.
Door dit laatste ben ik erg geïnteresseerd geraakt in de Argentijnse geschiedenis an sich, dus vroeg ik me af of jullie, Argentinië kenners, me een boek over deze geschiedenis kunnen aanraden.

Het wordt nog een hele opgave om uit deze spelers de beste 18 mee te nemen. Voor de 3 dispensatieplekken zou ik gaan voor Rulli, Musacchio en Lanzini. Het blijft ook de vraag of Everton, Atletico Madrid en Juventus uiteindelijk Ramiro Funes Mori, Kranevitter en Dybala afstaan voor de Olympische Spelen.

Het middenveld heeft ontzettend veel potentie, en Argentinie heeft momenteel heel veel goede nummers 5 met Kranevitter, Ascacibar, Lucas Romero en de niet geselecteerde Gli Romero. Opvallend dat Cartabia niet bij deze voorselectie zit.

Pastore is geblesseerd en zal niet deelnemen aan de Copa America en ook Lavezzi is een groot vraagteken. Het zou dus best kunnen dat Martino alsnog Dybala selecteert voor de Copa America.

The Tango Singer by Tomás Eloy Martínez
Bruno Cadogan, a doctoral student in New York, is having trouble with his dissertation on Jorge Luis Borges’s essays on the tango. He decides to travel to Buenos Aires in search of inspiration and a disabled, haemophiliac tango singer named Julio Martel – rumoured to be even better than the legendary Carlos Gardel.

Cadogan arrives in the Argentinian capital in 2001, in the midst of financial meltdown and political instability. He traverses Buenos Aires in pursuit of the elusive singer, who makes unscheduled appearances in seemingly random locations across the city. But as he begins to unravel the mystery of Martel’s life, he learns that the tango singer’s performances map the city’s murky past.

Cadogan also develops an obsession with the “The Aleph” – the imaginary point in space that contains the entire universe – as described in a Borges short story.

Vanwege de degradatie van Argentinos Juniors verwacht ik dat de 21 jarige spelmaker: Luciano Cabral Gaat vertrekken. Ik hoop dat River een poging gaat doen om hem te contracteren. Speler met veel inzicht, goede pass en een uitstekende techniek.

Aan Ruiz van Colon is ook een interessante speler, en hij heeft aangegeven dat hij wil vertrekken bij Colon. Hij heeft een principeakkoord met Sporting Clube de Portugal voor een transferbedrag van 6 miljoen dollar.

Gallardo heeft aangegeven dat hij komend seizoen een grote schoonmaak bij River Plate wil gaan houden.

Volgens diverse media zouden deze spelers de formatie moeten vormen komend seizoen:

Dybala wordt zoals de berichten steeds aangegeven niet vrijgegeven door Juventus voor de Olympische spelen, en ik vind het onbegrijpelijk dat Lavezzi de voorkeur krijgt boven hem.

2018 wordt in principe de laatste kans voor Messi om een WK te winnen, maar met Martino als trainer gaat dat absoluut niet gebeuren. Het zou triest zijn als een speler zoals hij nooit iets gaat winnen met de Nationale ploeg.

Lanús thrash San Lorenzo to claim the Primera title

Atlético Madrid’s defeat in the Champions League final earlier in the weekend provided an example of when perhaps worthy winners end up falling just short. After dominating the regular season, the worry was that Lanús would be denied the Transición title on Sunday afternoon by a San Lorenzo side that have gradually improved over the past two months.

Any fears were quickly dispelled in the Monumental where Lanús produced an awesome display of powerful, attacking football that proved too much for San Lorenzo.

El Granate started an incredible pace and had already come close to taking the lead when Oscar Benítez headed them in front after 17 minutes and they were little let up in the intensity to Jorge Almirón’s side.

Such was the level of dominance that San Lorenzo would have been mightily relieved to get to half time still only a goal down.

There was little change in the momentum after the break and just before the hour mark, Lanús doubled their advantage. Young Paraguayan Miguel Almirón, had been not only the standout player of the final but perhaps the player of the Transición, and so it was fitting that it was the 22-year-old who burst purposefully towards the San Lorenzo goal before calmly stroking the ball into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area.

A third Lanús goal still looked more likely than anything else and when Pablo Guede’s desperation led him to replace left back Emmanuel Mas with striker Martín Cauteruccio, it played into the hands of El Granate.

The ever-impressive José Luis Gómez burst from right back into the space left by Mas’ absence and squared the ball for José Sand to tap in a third and late on, Lautaro Acosta poked a fourth running through on goal after dispossessing Matías Caruzzo.

The performance was consistent with Lanús’ level throughout the tournament and so aside from the mauling inflicted on San Lorenzo, no one could deny that Almirón’s side deserved the title.

Such is the transitory nature of Argentine football everything needs to click into place for a side to win a league title in such a manner and for Lanús it has undoubtedly done that. From the astute young signings for Gustavo Gómez and Miguel Almirón to the shrewd additions of experienced veterans like Pepe Sand and Román Martínez, El Granate have been superb.

Argentinie heeft met Lanus een terechte kampioen gekregen. De ploeg heeft het hele seizoen uitstekend voetbal gespeeld, en indien deze ploeg bij elkaar kan worden gehouden dan kunnen ze ver komen bij de komende editie van de Copa Libertadores.

Ik ben vooral onder de indruk van José Luis Gomsez die afgelopen seizoen veruit de beste rechtsback in de Argentijnse competitie was. Indien hij zich zo blijft ontwikkelen zie ik hem in de toekomst bij een topclub terecht komen.

Edit: Sand heeft wederom zijn waarde bewezen bij Lanus, en hij blijft een uitstekende spits voor een Argentijnse ploeg, maar komt duidelijk tekort voor een grote Europese competitie.

Almiron is ook een speler met heel veel potentie.

Lachwekkend dat Martino Guido Pizarro als vervanger oproept van Biglia. Als je dan toch een speler wilt oproepen die in Zuid-Amerika speelt was dan voor Fernando Zuqui gegaan die afgelopen seizoen de grote uitblinker was bij Codoy Cruz, en een dag geleden een transfer heeft gemaakt na Boca Juniors.

Ik heb het gevoel dat deze Copa America een grote deceptie voor Argentinie gaat worden. Hopelijk wordt dan meteen na afloop van het toernooi Martino ontslagen.

Ik zie de AFA ook deze Copa niet boycotten, maar het zou me niets verbazen dat er de komende tijd nog vele lijken uit de kast gaan komen uit de tijd van Grondona. Zijn zoon lijkt toch iets minder macht te hebben dan Julio Grondona.

Talleres de Córdoba return to the Primera after 12 years


Talleres’ long road back from relegation at the end of the 2003-04 season was completed on Sunday afternoon when Pablo Guiñazú’s injury time winner against All Boys in Floresta ensured La T the Nacional B title and a place back in Argentina’s top flight.

With Chacarita Juniors thrashing Independiente Rivadavia, league leaders Talleres needed three points to guarantee their promotion and after Rodrigo Burgos was sent off in the first half and Germán Lessman gave All Boys an 82nd minute lead that looked unlikely.

However, Frank Kudelka’s side haven’t in all 19 matches of this Transición and are in fact unbeaten in 37 so they were unlikely to go lying down.

Gonzalo Klusener tapped in an equaliser almost immediately and in the 94th minute Pablo Guiñazú fired a dramatic winner from the edge of the box to spark wild celebrations.

Having dropped down to the Torneo Argentino A, a return to the Primera after a 12-year absence is a momentous occasion for the historic club.


The reaction of the players and staff showed what this meant to them but as the people in Córdoba poured into the street, the joy of the city was there for all to see.

Guede stuns San Lorenzo with resignation


Despite reaching the Transición Final and already beginning preparations for the new season, Pablo Guede has resigned from San Lorenzo after only six months in charge.

The 41-year-old had a difficult start to life in Bajo Flores which resulted in the club’s early exit from the Copa Libertadores but Los Cuervos had begun to show signs of progress over the second half of last season and despite the heavy defeat to Lanús in the final, there appeared to be a decent foundation for the future.

However, Guede tendered his resignation on Wednesday morning amid reported disagreements with the club’s leadership.

The major difference of opinion appears to be over the continuation of veteran midfielder Juan Mercier.

Guede told the club that the 36-year-old had no part in his plans and he desired a new defensive midfielder but president Matías Lammens has reportedly already confirmed that a new one-year deal will be signed with the player.

The club and the now ex-coach have also not seen eye to eye on their list of transfer targets during this window and some have speculated that Chilean club Colo Colo may have contacted Guede over a possible return to the league where he previously enjoyed success with Palestino.

One potential hitch for Guede and any potential new employer is the termination clause in his contract of $1.5 million which was inserted when he took over from Edgardo Bauza in December.

There is a suspicion that a lucrative offer from the Middle East might be on the table and Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr have been mentioned as a possible suitor.

So, with preseason training due to start San Lorenzo must find a new coach and there are already a number of names buzzing around.

Former Racing boss Diego Cocca is an early front runner given that he is still a free agent since leaving Avellaneda but Ricardo Zielinski and Rubén Cousillas, who was Manuel Pellegrini’s assistant at Manchester City are also in the frame.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has reportedly contacted Cristian Espinoza, Mauricio Martínez and José Luis Gómez to confirm that they will be named in Gerardo Martino’s 18-man squad for the Olympic games in Rio de Janeiro.

The three players’ clubs were notified today of the decision and appear to be the first confirmed members of the squad that will travel to Brazil looking to add a third Olympic gold.

Huracán’s Cristian Espinoza has been a regular fixture of Humberto Grondona’s under-20 side and helped Los Pibes lift the South American championship which saw Argentina qualify for Rio.

The pacy 21-year-old forward is already being linked with a move away from Parque Patricios this summer with Villarreal and Atalanta ready to pay his €5 million release clause and a place in Argentina’s Olympic squad will only raise his profile.

For José Luis Gómez and Mauricio Martínez it will be a first time wearing the Albiceleste but after impressive league form they have forced their way into Martino’s plans.

22-year-old Gómez was perhaps the Primera División’s standout full back and his endless running and natural width was central to Lanús’ title success. Certainly in a position where Argentina have been woefully short in recent years, El Cafú santiagueño could have an important future for Argentina.

Martínez has been an impressive part of Unión’s side for a couple of years now and looks poised to move this summer regardless of his potential involvement in Rio.

The 23-year-old defensive midfielder is a powerful ball winner who is capable of dropping back into defence and Rosario Central are leading the chase of Primera clubs trying to wrap up a deal early before any European clubs maybe alerted.


With three spaces taken, and another three reserved for the over-23 players, it leaves just 12 places left to fill.

In theory Argentina could take perhaps the strongest squad in the competition but with Juventus denying Paulo Dybala permission, Atlético Madrid potentially doing the same with Ángel Correa and Boca asking that Cristian Pavón is left out due to their Copa Libertadores commitments, Martino’s eventual 18 could be weakened.

Gabriel Heinze out to 'win every game' as Argentinos Juniors coach


The former United man will try his luck in the Nacional B after an abortive first coaching spell at Godoy Cruz and said he was committed to attacking football


Ex-Manchester United defender Gabriel Heinze wants to "win every game and dominate" after being confirmed as the new coach at Argentinos Juniors.

Argentinos struggled during the Transicion tournament, and were relegated to the Nacional B for the second time in two years after finishing rock-bottom of the average points table.

And Heinze has now been installed as the club's third coach in six months as he looks to steer the Bicho to a rapid return to the top flight.

"This challenged motivated me because the club have a huge history and a talented team. It is a very big challenge for me, being here will make me grow as a professional," he said on being introduced as the team's new trainer.

"I will do everything possible to go out and win every game and dominate. My idea [of attacking football] can work. It is a very tough league, and there will be some tight games."

Gerardo Martino’s 2016 Olympic squad is gradually taking shape and should be completed over the coming days before they begin their preparations on July 4th.

After the news that Cristian Espinoza, Mauricio Martínez and José Luis Gómez were called up yesterday, the AFA have confirmed that they will be joined by Gerónimo Rulli, Emanuel Mammana, Jonathan Silva, Giovani Lo Celso, Leandro Paredes and Ángel Correa.

Ángel Correa captained the Argentina under-20s to the South American championship and it had been feared that Atlético Madrid would not give permission for the 21-year-old to play in Rio de Janeiro. However, it would appear that the former San Lorenzo forward will now play a significant role in La Albiceleste’s attempt to land a third Olympic gold medal.

Real Socided goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli will take one of the three over-23 players’ positions and given that the 23-year-old is arguably Argentina’s number one, Martino’s side will be in safe hands.

River Plate’s Emanuel Mammana and Boca Juniors’ Jonathan Silva have already represented the senior side and are joined by Paris Saint Germain bound Giovani Lo Celso and Roma midfielder Leandro Paredes.

With nine players already named, Martino will confirm the remaining nine over the coming days and perhaps the biggest question remaining is the number nine role.

Paulo Dybala appears out of the question and so Mauro Icardi, Jonathan Calleri and Giovanni Simeone are all competing for that spot.

From Maradona's long shadow to an inept FA, the real reasons behind Messi's international retirement

In terms of raw sadness, last night's Copa America Centenrario final was the most emotional I can remember seeing Lionel Messi.

The Barcelona star skied a penalty in the shootout as Argentina lost the final for a second year in a row in the same manner and to the same opposition, Chile.

Coupled with the 2014 World Cup final defeat to Germany, that's three defeats in three major finals for his country in the last two years.

But he took everyone by surprise when he announced his retirement from international football at the age of just 29.

And that's not all; other team-mates like Sergio Aguero, Javier Mascherano are also believed to be considering calling an end to their international careers right in the middle of their 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

To get to the bottom of Messi's decision, Newstalk's Team 33 spoke to The Buenos Aires Herald football writer Daniel Edwards.

Inept FA
One issue behind Messi's decision is the ineptitude of an Argentina FA (AFA) that is not fit for purpose. As Edwards explains, "the Argentine FA is in a complete mess at the moment and it has been really ever since the death of [former president] Julio Grondona just after the 2014 World Cup. It's in a state of limbo, let's say," says Daniel of an FA led by an interim president without much popular support.

"Now, just before the Copa America, there was a judicial intervention and just last night, minutes before the final kicked off, there was talk that the judge in charge of the investigation was going to dismiss the observers that FIFA want to put in place to make sure that the intervention is done in a way that's acceptable for them. So I think the AFA is a big factor in this," said Edwards.

And although you would think Messi and his team-mates would be immune from all this, there were complaints about facilities.

Indeed, in the Instagram post above, Messi hits out publicly at the FA, referring to them as a "disaster", explaining that he, Aguero and the rest of the team were waiting yet again for a plane to take them to their destination.

"It was a rare outburst from Messi, who tries to keep out of politics and off-field complaints as much as he can. But saying that the AFA's a disaster, to be honest, is very hard to disagree with," says Edwards, making a point that poor standards, which are reflected in the domestic league, are not befitting of a two-time World Cup winning nation with some of the best players on the planet.

Maradona's Shadow
Argentine football is always searching for the next Maradona. Lionel Messi arguably has surpassed the 1986 World Cup winner overall throughout his career if club form is also taken into account.

But given that he left for Barcelona as a teenager, coupled with his quiet demeanour, his popularity has not hit the heights it arguably should have in his homeland. Also, Maradona has occasionally been critical of the player, intimating that the departing captain is not a leader despite his incredible talent. Indeed before the final, he had stated Argentina's players need not return home if they lost to Chile.

"We know that Maradona is a controversial guy and he likes to make the headlines. Even worse than that, in my opinion, the fact he continues to get this oxygen... this is a phenomenon which is almost peculiar to Argentina, because the whole country lives with the idea of finding the new Maradona," Daniel explains.

"The Argentine press, and as a result a lot of the fans, have this insidious need to find a new Maradona. Messi tried his best and he gave absolutely everything to the national team. But he's not Maradona and it's pointless to even make this comparison. It's sort of a collusion between the press and Maradona himself, who lives off what he did for Argentina."

Could Messi change his mind?
As Daniel says, Argentina would be "stupid" not to try and persuade Messi to make a U-turn because they "need him. But on a more general level, this renovation of the Argentina team is overdue."

With more than just Messi alone retiring, it's now up to towards newcomers like Matías Kranevitter and Paulo Dybala to provide fresh impetus to a talented generation that has consistently failed to get over the final hurdle.

De president van het land (Macri) heeft hem persoonlijk gebeld vandaag met het verzoek om door te gaan en zelfs snuivertje, die niks anders heeft gedaan behalve onrust zaaien in de afgelopen weken, zegt nu ineens dat Messi in de steek is gelaten door alles en iedereen en dat hij gewoon de capitan moet zijn in Rusland (de fucking ironie). Valdano is de man die met de mooiste verklaring is gekomen. Hij zei het volgende: "Messi speelt allang niet meer voor Argentinië om te winnen, maar om vergeven te worden, maar voor wat? Sommige Argentijnen vragen zich altijd hardop af wat Messi voor ons heeft gedaan. Nou, ik zou die vraag graag willen omdraaien. Wat heeft Argentinië en de Argentijnen in het algemeen ooit voor Messi betekend?"

Ondanks alle mooie woorden is het te laat. Ik vind 2016 nog rijkelijk laat, gezien alle shit die hij sinds zijn negentiende over zich heeft gekregen. Menotti voorspelde al dat het niet lang meer zou duren voordat Messi de deur zou sluiten. Zodra het WK in Rusland begint is hij 30. Dat is een prachtige leeftijd om te presteren. En al helemaal als je over Messi's voetbalintelligentie en talent beschikt. Daarom moet het ook onbeschrijfelijk pijnlijk voor een winnaar als Messi zijn om dit allemaal aan zich voorbij te laten gaan.

Het is wel om moedeloos van te worden. Dit was veruit Messi's beste finale in dat shirt én uitgerekend dan mist hij een penalty. Hij moest het gisteren constant tegen 4/5 opnemen en het lukte hem ook nog meermaals om ze te passeren en gevaar te stichten, maar helaas.

Hij heeft tientallen magische wedstrijden in dat shirt gespeeld, maar dit is de eerste wedstrijd die in mij opkomt als ik aan Messi's interlandcarriere denk.

Aguero heeft het eigenlijk nooit laten zien bij het eerste en Di Maria heeft het verschrikkelijk vaak laten afweten. En dat zijn eigenlijk de enigen (en Mascherano) die meer dan één seizoen hebben laten zien van wereldklasse te zijn. We kunnen nou niet zeggen dat Rojo, Biglia, Mori, Roncaglia, Lavezzi, Romero, Otamendi, Gaitan Andujar, Mercado etc. die er allemaal steevast bij zitten heel goed zijn.

Het ligt grotendeels aan de trainers, ja. Dat zonder twijfel. Veel slechter als de trainer die ze nu hebben bestaan ze niet. Maar laten we de druk van de 40 miljoen Argentijnen die ze met zich meedragen niet onderschatten. Dat is het meest ondankbare volk dat er maar bestaat namelijk.

En gasten als qsh0x, RaulVilla etc. die daadwerkelijk denken dat iemand als Messi enkel obv deze finale ermee stopt, hebben het niet bij het rechte eind. Dit is iets wat al jaren speelt. In 2011 dacht hij al aan stoppen en imo had hij dat in 2014 al moeten doen. Die gasten hadden toen al 24 jaar geen halve finale gespeeld en onder zijn leiding haalden ze zelfs de finale, maar het enige wat hij daarvoor kreeg was stront. Toch denk ik ergens dat hij hierop terugkomt. Er zullen grote veranderingen plaatsvinden dit jaar. Hopelijk vertrekt Tata na de OS en stellen ze een trainer aan met meer dan één hersencel. Als ze dan een beetje doorselecteren en gasten als Kranevitter, Dybala, Correa, Rulli etc. vaste waarden worden, zou hij misschien nog kunnen terugkeren. Ze verdienen het niet hoor, maar denk dat Adidas, AFA, en de media zich tot het uiterste zullen inspannen om hem weer terug te krijgen. Een WK zonder Messi is minder interessant, hoe je het ook wendt of keert. Maar goed, laat ze maar eerst kwalificeren. Toen Messi er niet bij was in de eerste 4/5 wedstrijden van de kwalificatiecyclus ivm een blessure, stonden ze één na laatste. Hij heeft ze weer aardig op weg geholpen en ze staan er nu weer goed voor, maar het zou mij niet verbazen als ze dit alsnog zouden verpesten. Choken zit in hun bloed blijkbaar.
